I have designed an architecturally inspired study desk that incorporates a predominantly traditional body design with some contemporary aspects. Joinery such as dominos, biscuits, dovetails, mortise and tenons, mitres and rebates were included. The main timber used was New Guinea rosewood with feature aspects such as the inlays and drawer handles made using a thermally modified oak. The sides, back and middle panels as well as the drawer bases incorporate rosewood veneered MDF and the tabletop was inlayed with leather-wrapped MDF. The project involved many challenges because of the number of components as well as new skills such as flared legs and handmade handles.
