Mallee Root & Jarrah Queen Bed 1 of 5

The timber inspiration came from the discovery of discarded mallee roots at my auntie’s wood heap. After refining a rough piece, an intricate grain structure was revealed that inspired a backlit feature headboard that encapsulated the natural form of the timbers. Arranging 30mm sawn mallee root pieces into a 1300 x 500mm jarrah frame, a fibreglass resin was poured to create a solid structure with a transparent binding of the mallee root cross cuts.

Locally sourced Western Australian hardwood jarrah was selected for its strength and interesting hues within the grain formed the base and frame. Simple but strong biscuit joinery techniques of 45° and 90° joints secured each piece together. Three coats of varnish enhanced the natural grains.
