This heavy duty pallet conveyed electrical switch gear for a resort. From the certification codes stamped on the pallet, its country of origin was determined. A search then revealed, and narrowed down, the species of timber imported to the country of origin for pallet production. The characteristics of each species were researched and by process of elimination a final probability of species was arrived at.

The brief was to construct a creative piece of woodwork from recycled timber as part of the CUV20111 Certificate II in Visual Arts: Furniture & Wood Course. The theme of a treasure chest was chosen to tie in with the rustic nature of the timber.

The Treasure Chest features finger joints corners constructed using a Gifkins jig. The width of the boards was achieved by edge to edge jointing. The solid timber edge to edge jointed base was rebated into the carcass. The Treasure Chest lid frame was achieved by machining a semi rhomboidal shape and cutting the mitre joints on the leading edge with the rhomboidal shape at 45° to the vertical. The mitre joints were reinforced with keys. The solid timber edge to edge jointed top was rebated into the lid frame raised panel style. The lid was attached to the box carcase by brass 90° lock butt hinges.
