This vase was designed with the intention to make it look as though it was made up of two layers. To achieve this effect I turned up the external shape and hollow turned the inside on the lathe. Once I’d marked out a design I was ready to start carving. I used a dremel with a very coarse sanding disc to provide the recess. I then created the irregular pattern using the Dremel with a very small tip to burn the wood to create a nice contrast against the light coloured timber. Fine sanding; three layers of lacquer; a final rub with steel wool plus the application of sandalwood wax and the vase was complete.
