We're excited to announce David Boucher as a judge for 2024 Maker of the Year, presented by Carbatec.

Decades of working with clients from around the world has given a great depth of experience in innovation and creativity to David Boucher and his Toowoomba, Qld based team of makers. Boucher & Co has forged a global reputation for design excellence, crafting fine art one-of-a-kind, bespoke mechanical furniture pieces for clients that include royalty, sultans, movie stars, heads of state and captains of industry.

“We design and make extraordinary art furniture pieces”, explains David. “Bespoke is as much about finding extraordinary materials that will tell a story as it is about extraordinary craftsmanship. It’s about imagination, understanding what our capabilities are and communicating that to the client so they can start to see the possibilities. We build things so they can be repaired for hundreds of years, so there’s hundreds of years of life in them. If you build something that be repaired forever how much more value have you given that piece?”

In an article for Australian Wood Review (issue 121, December 2023) David wrote how understanding the client was an important part of the bespoke maker's skillset. Read David's article here.

In the video below, David Boucher talks about the meaning of being a bespoke maker. He touches on how understanding the client’s needs and personal history can allow a piece to tell the client's own story.

While David’s company Boucher & Co may operate at the luxury end of the market David has keen understanding of the struggle and heart that goes into designing and making, especially when that’s undertaken on a professional level. David brings a rare understanding of materials and processes as well as a keen appreciation for the unique nature of each maker's work.
