Mary Tsai: The best design inspiration is around you

What inspires you? Sometimes it's right in front of you. Mary Tsai is an architect and furniture designer maker who takes inspiration directly from the world around her.

The bookcase that Mary Tsai has entered in Maker of the Year, presented by Carbatec, was the first in a line of furniture inspired by the architecture her hometown of Philadelphia, USA. The Ben Franklin Bridge was the inspiration for this piece, which takes notes from the railing details, the curved and sweeping arches, the vertical cables, and the beautiful colour. The Franklin bookcase is made from white oak and acrylic.
