Inspiration is everywhere – nature, landscapes, experiences, music and very often people who have been influential in one's life. Todd Atkins named his walnut stool The Little Richard for a number of reasons. ‘My grandfather’s name was Richard and he was my biggest inspiration to make things. He was a very handy man, and I plan on also giving him a big brother bar stool just called Richard. The name also reflects my music background and love of classic music!’

The stool is also subtitled A Journey from Idea to Reality because it marked a turning point in Todd’s life. “It’s a symbol of my passion and dedication to the craft. It started as a small project for my home. As I worked on it, I realised how much joy and fulfillment I derived from the process of designing and crafting something with my own hands.’

Todd’s turning point happened over ten years ago around the time he was at university. ‘I studied visual art straight out of school but out of need for money I started labouring and found a love for making things with my hands. I’m a full time carpenter still but in the process of building a catalogue of pieces so I can transition to being a full time furniture maker.’

In Todd’s ‘no-talking’ video you can see the entire build process.
