The Wunderkammer is a glass fronted display cabinet inspired by the works of James Krenov. It was made from a single board of American Cherry and finished in linseed oil. The purpose of the piece was to be able to display a multitude of items, this is achieved by a shelf integrated into the stand, internal glass shelving, and a fully lined drawer with removable trays which increase the storage space. A large proportion of the front is glazed to allow the items to be easily viewed. Additionally, the glass was selected to have a high degree of light transmittance and UV protection. I created the door handle, drawer pull and shelf pins from solid brass. I got the idea from seeing the hand carved door pulls and shelf pins in Krenov's "Cabinetmakers notebook". The piece does not demonstrate any new thinking, but is a reflection and celebration of the history fine wooden furniture updated and applied to a contemporary piece.
