A fine and elegant desk inspired by Art Deco and Art Nouveau forms, and the work of Rennie Mackintosh. Limited by the depth governed by the space, I wanted to maximise the storage and the actual writing space of the desk. This led to the curved drawer section on the top, where there is some small drawers for pencil storage and an open section for papers. This curve was then repeated through the bottom drawers to allow for more legroom through the centre. All drawers are hand dovetailed and traditionally fit. The client also requested a concealed lockable drawer. I engineered a small spring loaded iron bar that is drawn down with a rare earth magnet which allows the drawer to open. Once the magnet is released, it springs back up into a hole at the bottom of the drawer to lock it. The drawers are also organised into removable trays made from Huon pine and padded with cotton velvet. I wanted to make a contrast between the timbers, so I chose Maccasar Ebony and Huon pine. The legs are solid Ebony, turned and then shaped to be flat on the outer corner, which is then inlaid with a fine motif in Huon pine. This inlay was directly influenced by the stained glass works of Mary and Rennie mackintosh - a feminine shape common through Art Nouveau. The top features cross banding and a fine inlay. This was a complex build, but a really enjoyable one working with a trusting and beautiful client.
