Rowan Dicks, Wisp (Furniture)

Wisp is an occasional chair with a hint of comfortable dining – designed not only as a statement of visual pleasure but also for comfort. Something to lean back in with a nice glass of wine. For this design, I made soft curved back braces from laminated bamboo veneers that gently hug your back. The seat is upholstered with a patterned onyx fabric which reflects light at different angles and appears to change colour. The base and wisps are made from recycled matai. The wisps at the top are made with reinforced segmented blocks. Each pre-tapered block is threaded onto a metal rod, then scribed and cut so that each block follows a curve. They are then hand carved to achieve a smooth organic flow.
