Inspired by Curtis Buchanan's democratic armchair as a starting point, I have made my version to fit with the curves of my Teapoy dining table. I have constructed this chair from locally sourced wind thrown Elm for the seat & steam bent a curve in the head rest. End-of-life European Ash that has yielded quilted olive ash timber I have used to turn for the legs, hand shaped for the spindles & steam bent for the crinoline stretcher. I have also steam bent the arm rests. Both timbers are examples of early settler plantings to New Zealand. I like to make my chairs with round edges & smooth curves so they have a flow to the eye & the hand. I have constructed this Windsor chair using wedged tapered through mortice & tenon joints fixed in place using hyde glue. I have used Walnut wedges for these joints to make a feature of this detail. I enjoy creating furniture from natures discards while also sequestering carbon at the same time. This chair has been finished in Osmo Polyx oil.
