Jake Turner, Web Design Coffee Table (STUDENT 2021)
A Contemporary Blackwood Coffee table constructed to attract attention through its unique design. Joints such as Cross-halving joints and Bridle joints were constructed on angles and curved throughout the piece which provided high difficulty and a great visual effect. Vacuum pressing veneers was also used in the job to create my own plywood for the ‘web design’ top and bottom patterns. This homemade plywood eliminated short grain issues in the web while bringing another display of skill to the design. I also dressed my own timber for the tabletop and used a variety of complex shaping techniques to produce the perfect top and frame shape. Hidden drawers, complete with a maker’s mark inlay in the base were also incorporated in the complex design. Overall, an intricate design presented a high difficulty to produce an intriguing final product
