Wabi-Sabi Table, “The perfection of imperfection” has been this tables story for many years now. The Tallowwood tree (Eucalyptus microcorys) grew on a hill on the Dorrigo Plateau. It was felled in the late 1980’s by a logger Ken McKenzie. The tree was a double leader, he took the two trunks, but he left the twisted and bent main trunk on the forest floor. Twenty years later the log was salvaged by the block’s current owners. This slab was one of the worst of them (I have dried them all and know). A large void at one end and major rot in the other. The void was infilled with Blackwood ties (Acacia Melanoxylon), to show the hole that was, and the rot cut out and infilled with another large piece of Blackwood. The Blackwood came from a paddock no more than 5 km from where the Tallowwood tree grew. The organic curvy base has been designed and hand crafted to complement the Wabi-Sabi top, bringing in the elements of the forest, with its twists and curves, and outward growth.
