Cody Drapper, Victorian Falls (STUDENT 2021)
Victorian Falls was designed with workflow as its main focus. The large desk surface allows for multiple devices and resources to be used simultaneously, while ample space in the six main drawers delivers more than enough storage options. The mitred corner is a metaphor for this flow and provides inspiration as the cascading grain takes its audience on an aesthetic journey. The opposite side contrasts this torrent of timber with simplistic vertical supports, which results in an asymmetrical balance. Although the project is made almost entirely from Victorian Ash, walnut stain on the frame, top and side contrast the natural finish of the drawers. Traditional mortice and tenon carcase joints and dovetailed drawers pay homage to furniture makers of old, whilst modern hardware and domino widening joints utilise contemporary comforts. A hidden drawer adds interest and provides the user with the opportunity to store sensitive documents without fear of a privacy breach. The wheels allow for ease of mobility and are quick and easy to remove. Victorian Falls’ marriage between traditional and contemporary techniques delivers a synergy of functionality and aesthetically pleasing details that will serve for years to come.
