Antony Introna, Victorian Ash Glass Display Unit (Furniture)
This unit was designed by myself and the team at Distinct Joinery. It was built to be the centrepiece for a large light filled home office. The client wanted a design with minimal joins and as much glass as possible. Originally, it was to be painted a shade of emerald green. We soon moved away from that idea, once the unit started coming together and the timber began to show its true beauty. The unit was made from solid Victorian ash, with timber veneer for the shelving, tops and bottoms. The brass hinges and pewter T-handles were sourced from mother of pearl. Clear toughened glass (6mm) was used in the doors and end panels and fixed using solid timber beads. The doors and end panels were mitred and a domino was used to reinforce it. The unit also featured tongue and grooved solid timber back panelling (90mm wide) and adjustable feet mounted inside the legs to allow it to sit level on the beautiful parquetry flooring of the home office. The difficult part of this job was working out how the unit was to be constructed in the workshop to be fully adjustable and then flat packed. It had to be brought up a set of stairs, so gluing it up in the workshop was not an option. Due to its large size, the unit had to be constructed in small sections and then finished on site. It took over 3 days to install the unit on site because of the time taken for the glue to dry and glazing of the doors and end panels.
