Reagan Ho, Traditional Mahjong Table (STUDENT 2021)
The Traditional Mahjong Table is made from Jarrah, with inlay, picture frames and marquetry design made from Huon pine. Mahjong is a traditional Chinese tile-based game, it was played on real timber however, the quality of these tables has gone down and I wanted to restore the beauty of the traditional table. The techniques used in my project included mortise and tenon, housing joints, half-lap joints, and dovetails. In addition, the centre of the table is a marquetry design symbolising my family name 何, I hope this table can be passed down my family for future generations to enjoy. Furthermore, the picture frames on the side of the table are the 8 flower tiles used in the game. The challenges faced during the construction of the table included making the mortise and tenon joints flush, constructing the marquetry design and the dovetail joints. The table was finished with Scandinavian oil. Ultimately, I found this project very rewarding with a variety of techniques and skills creating this Mahjong table that my family and friends can enjoy.
