Joshua Tevelen, Traditional Grandfather clock in Australian Cedar (Student Awards 2018)
This clock is 2056mm high x 600mm wide by 350mm deep and was designed to be a piece that would become an heirloom in the family for many generations to come. I modified the design from the plans to look more modern by making the goose-neck moulding on the top one continuous curve and also added a drawer for storage of maintenance components. This drawer was constructed using hand-cut dovetails, half-blind at the front and through at the rear. I added a false bottom in the drawer to create a document safe which can be completely removed along with the supporting structure if I would like to make the drawer deeper to fit larger items in it. I book-matched the backboard so that the grain was identical on either side of the axis of symmetry and I did this for any of the other panels that required widening. The clock has removable 'movement access panels' which are held in place by a ball catch so that the face isn't required to be removed to access the movement for lubrication and maintenance. The whole clock is constructed form Australian cedar. I chose this timber due to its browny-orange colour and I chose Danish oil as the finish as this brings out the colour very well and also leaves it with a very smooth and velvety finish and a satin lustre which is one of the qualities I desire in a finished piece of work. It has three coats of sealer and three coats of Danish oil all applied by brush. All of the sanding was done by hand with the exception of an initial hit with a random orbital sander.
