Tower of Babel H 86 cm | W 43 cm | D 43 cm Oiled and varnished Swedish elm and pine. Love letter storage. I was assigned to make an object that praised the qualities and beauty of Swedish wood. Pine is one of the most common wood species in Sweden and therefore have a long tradition in Swedish interior and furniture design with normally chunky proportions. The pine selection have a wide range from wood with knots and twigs to completely clean as seen here. Not as commonly used is the the Swedish elm, while it can give an almost gold shimmering surface if treaded right. This unique object of applied art is made for keeping your most precious items and documents in a safe place for later. The boxes are made of solid wood that can be stacked on top of each other in any order, with a cross glued lid that can close the top or function as a tray upside down. If the house is on fire, grab those three holes on each side in the bottom and make a run for it to save all those important memories. If you run out of space you can just add another floor, or as many as you like. But be carful, the Tower of Babel never reached heaven. This project aim for raising questions regarding what can be defined as furniture and what’s not, and sculpturally work with arousing the eye and the observers imagination.
