This is the Torii table. Traditional Japanese Torii gates symbolically represent the transition from the mundane to the sacred. It is constructed from two beautiful boards of Tasmanian Blackwood, complimented by Ipe wedges and drawer pull. The drawer sides are made from celery top pine. The two top panels are book-matched from one resawn quarter sawn board. Traditional joinery techniques were used including through wedged mortise and tenons and a traditional drawer constructed with hand cut dovetails, solid wood base and drawer slips. The top panel is secured by stainless wood screws with oversized washers to allow for movement. Lower panel is fixed by buttons also allowing for movement. Legs are splayed and secured by the two stretchers that are housed onto the lower rails. This piece was a very enjoyable challenge thanks to the wealth of knowledge David Upfill Brown shared with us during his time here at Sturt.
