I wanted to create a dining chair where the back design could be explored. An easy way to achieve this is a three legged chair, where the legs, seats, bracing and back spine are fixed, whilst the back supports (either side of the spine) can be altered. As long as the shape of these supports conform to the body whilst seated, any comfortable design is possible. For this particular design I created a ribbed look, as opposed to having a solid back. The multiple arms highlight the compound curves required for the ergonomic comfort of the chair. When seated, the arms embrace the body giving a pleasing, multi-point support. Using through tenons to attach the back to the spine gives strength that allows lightness and flexibility of design. The arched bracing is recessed into the front legs, the seat and the back leg, to give a continuous curve through these elements. The back spine has a solid timber core with laminate both front and back to keep a stable shape and give strength. Jarrah highlights on the arms enhance the design.
