This is the Se-di lamp. Made from American Black Walnut and American Oak, this piece drew inspiration from a mid-century trend, which incorporated a side-table into the design. The name Se-di is the Cherokee word for Black Walnut, paying respect to the people from where this timber derives. This piece was an exercise in bending. To make this piece, I steam-bent walnut strips around a substrate and then book-matched shop-sawn veneer to make the tabletop, hand carved the legs and neck with a draw knife, spoke shave and some careful sanding, and then laminated oak veneer to calico cotton backing with steam bent and laminated walnut edging to strengthen the top and bottom of the lamp shade. The legs and neck have all been joined using hand cut round mortise and tenons. This piece was made under the supervision of Darren Oates while I was at the Sturt School for Wood in 2022.
