Lucy Scrivener, The Piwakawaka Chair (WORLD 2023)
- Country:
- New Zealand
Influenced by the environment in which it was made, The Piwakawaka Chair is designed to embody the organic beauty of its namesake, The Native Fantail. From the steam-bent laminated curves that form the chair back embodying the haiku (tail) of the manu (bird), the chair flows into a beautifully contoured ash cushion, with grain directing your view from the base of the back to the front two legs. These front legs resemble the front waewae (legs) of the Piwakawaka. In Maori culture the Piwakawaka is symbolically known as the messenger of bad news, which often overshadows the hidden beauty of this precious native bird of New Zealand. My main focus whilst designing this chair was to produce a product that would highlight the beauty of the Piwakawaka.
