The concept for The Enchantress was derived from Ancient Greek mythology and Homer's epic poem, The Odyssey, which depicts Odysseus’s encounters with enchanting mermaids, sirens, and the nymphs of Calypso island. The sculpture was carved from a solid budgeroo hard wood branch salvaged from our bush property, The Stiks. The female form was carved with full detail and proportions before the design of diagonal lines was marked accurately with ink. Then the piece was carefully hollowed out employing many techniques that mainly involved drills and keyhole saws. Steel rasps and sandpaper were used to refine and polish the apertures which spiralled and flowed down to the mermaid’s tail fin. The facial and hair features remain solid for contrast and enhancement of the piece.
