I would like to present my Industrial Technology Timber major work; a Tambour Wine Cabinet constructed from quality American White Oak. The cabinet includes the following features: - 2 x Ribbed Tambour external doors - A laminated curved wine rack holding up to 12 wine bottles. - 2 x Soft-close drawers - Rounded-over tabletop and base - Rounded-over legs and rails The dimensions of the cabinet are 1500mm long x 380mm wide and 870mm high. I used several different joinery methods throughout the construction, including dovetails in the drawers, housing joints for joining shelving to upright panels, steam bending of the wine rack, biscuits within the wide- boarded panels and dominoes to join the legs to the leg rails. A painter’s canvas drop sheet was used to connect each slat of the tambour doors to provide free movement around the curved cabinet. I used a water-based vanish finish on the flat surfaces of the cabinet in order to sustain a lighter colour and retain the integrity of the timber. However, with the tambour doors I chose a wax finish which allowed the doors to slide more freely. I am extremely pleased with the final product and was everything that I envisioned it would be.
