Cate Gillogly, Tambour Entertainment Unit (Student)

This Tambour Entertainment Unit, has been created with local (mid north coast) black butt, coupled with Californian redwood for my year 12 HSC major. I have used a minimalistic design to create an intricate complex project. This consists of 80 dovetail joints, hand routed tambour sliding door trench identical on both the top and base which also creates a 'train track' at the back of the project to allow the doors to open up fully to allow the hidden side shelves to be accessed, the legs were temporarily glued and turned as one big piece of timber and then split into four to create rounded legs with two straight edges, it had six drawers with push to pull opening mechanism, two middle drawers lined with kangaroo skins (personally sourced), tambour door which incorporates 100 individually laser cut slats glued onto canvas, I also added laser cut door handles with a bull head blackwood veneer inlays to integrate my farming passion, all legs were joined with large mortise and tenon joints and all shelving and uprights jointed with blind housing joints. When I first wanted to create my major project my teachers told me that my design was too technical, although they advised me not to make it I persisted and I am very happy I did. Due to this project being so complex and technical I needed to make prototypes to ensure my ideas would work, making these prototypes allowed me to perfect my skills to ensure a high quality piece. Overall I wanted to create a piece of furniture that would be passed down by generations and reflect all the time that went into making it. School: St Clares High School Taree Teacher: Bradley Hart
