Mark Perl, Study Desk (Student Awards 2019)
For my HSC major work I decided to create a study desk with a curved leg design through the drawers which was inspired by a Robb Helmkamp crafted wardrobe. I wanted to produce a high quality heirloom desk that would be functional but also had complex joinery to test my woodworking skills. I decided to use American oak and contrasting American walnut, timbers that complement each other and emphasise the curved leg design. The rest of my design incorporated many different joinery techniques including a mitred dovetail for the draw carcase, a sliding dovetail in the drawer fronts and a housing joint for the drawer backs. I also added a curved LED light which both adds another complex technique to the desk and is a very functional feature. Year 12, Castle Hill High School. Teacher: Bradley Turner
