Andrew Rankin, Still life of mass and void (ART, OBJECTS 2021)
1250x990x490mm, Kauri (felled by Kaipara District Council circa 1990), French polished, bent plexiglass, acrlic on paper, foam-core. 'Still Life of mass and void' explores the relationship between object and image. The distorted reflections in the multiple frames become the image, the viewer and the environment are brought into the context of the work. On closer inspection you can see painterly brushstrokes in the layers of paint beneath the reflective surface. This work is part of an ongoing series expermenting with the use of the frame as a sculptural device. The Kauri is french polished to bring out the chatoyancy of the wood. This artwork combines the qualities and unkown histroy of a precious resource, along with well considered compositional decisions to create an engaging object that allows the viewer to explore their own narratives within the work.
