Mat Joiner, Stand Up Draftsman Desk (RECYCLED & RESCUED 2023)

Country:
Australia

This piece was created using predominately reclaimed messmate that I salvaged from a variety of sources. It features a section which can be tilted and used at a series of different angles to facilitate a comfortable drawing experience, which can then be further extended upwards to be used as a 'stand up' desk. The legs on one end of the desk feature a shelf for some simple decoration, while the other end of the desk is supported by a cabinet which includes 3 'push-to-open' drawers on the sitting side and a 'secret' compartment on the front side. All knot holes, sap grooves and notches from the timbers previous life are filled with a clear resin to highlight the natural beauty of the old timber but also create a smooth working surface. There are a number of curved or rounded features throughout the design of the desk to match the aesthetics of the space it will occupy. The desk was finished off with Tung oil to leave it looking and feeling as natural as possible.
