This table is made from New Zealand grown Sycamore and North American grown Black Walnut. The conceptual origin of my design was to use a combination of timbers representing, from their source, my roots in Canada and my current home in New Zealand. The design is an exploration of contrasts and connectedness, taking strikingly different elements and through their combination creating a whole that is stronger and richer. Curved and linear forms, positive and negative spaces, light and dark tones, simplicity and complexity all echo and amplify across the work contributing to a whole greater than the sum of its parts. To create the curved elements air dried timber was exactingly prepared, steamed, and pressed between custom made male and female forms. These shaped components were then laminated together and combined in repeating and contrasting patterns. The entire piece was hand finished by block plane and card scraper and then protected with Osmo Hardwax Oil. Photography by Daniel Allen Studio NZ 2021
