This plant stand is part of a series of tables I've made recently using several different wood combinations. The idea for the plant stands came from trying to figure out how best to use up larger scraps left over from other projects. I designed a table that could be made from thinner, narrower material than I would normally use, which allowed me to use up much of the scrap wood that I was storing in my shop. This one has a walnut base and an ambrosia maple top. The legs are joined to the aprons using slip tenons and the joint where the two aprons cross one another is a haunched half-lap. To make the haunched half-lap I designed a simple jig that allowed me to cut the joint using a mix of hand and power tools, mainly a trim router and bandsaw, and then the fine fitting was done using a chisel. The joint is secured using glue and a single screw driven through the center of the half-lap.
