This dining chair is my first venture into furniture making. I decided that if I couldn’t make a chair then an alternative career change was needed. My primary concerns when designing the chair were aesthetics and comfort. I drew inspiration for the angles of the backrest from a set of barstools that we have that are exceptionally comfortable. I love American white oak and wanted to be able to make the chair entirely by myself without involving an upholsterer so settled on danish cord for the seat and backrest. The seat is woven using traditional methods, however the backrest was something else entirely and had to have a couple of attempts before I came up with something I was pleased with. The chair features wedged through tenons, incorporating spotted gum wedges, and draw bored joinery for the lower supporting leg rails. Finished in white Osmo to prevent yellowing of the oak over time with a topcoat of satin Osmo.
