Sean Millard, Smoke Oak Desk (Furniture)
This piece of furniture is a bespoke design for a newly-built home in Caulfield, Victoria. The brief was for a modern L-shaped desk with cabinetry to include shelving and drawers. Dimensions of the main desk: 2000L x 850W x 750H; the cabinet return: 1450L x 600W x 580H. There is a waterfall edge on the main desk and a sideways waterfall edge that wraps around the cabinet component. The finish is an Osmo black wash to highlight the natural grain of the wood. With the desk being of solid oak construction, consideration was given to management of innate timber movement, resulting in the use of concealed metal supports to keep the top, as well as the main leg, flat. Further design details include adjustable shelves, using brass pins and inserts; dovetail drawer boxes; routed drawer and door pulls; concealed Blum drawer runners; and a custom-made timber cable-hole plug. Utilising CAD, I incorporated Festool domino connectors into the design to facilitate ease of breakdown, transportation and installation. A challenging piece to make, the desk proved to be extremely rewarding for both me and the client; it not only enhances his office, but also enables him to work more efficiently.
