Martin Burgoyne, Silver leaves (Bowls & Boxes)
A Japanese style kogei box, or is it a chest of drawers, inspired by the work of Suda Kenji. It is veneered, harlequin style, on the outside and drawer fronts with book matched burl elm and vavona. The black band around the box is inlaid with silver filigree leaves. The hinged box, locked with a Japanese style padlock, opens in the middle onto a maple veneered interior, with solid lime drawers and a tray. These are enhanced with a range of opal and shell dots, and drawer 'knobs' which are zircon crystal stud earrings. The whole sits on a shaped base of woodie pear. It is presented in a typical Japanese 'tsutsumi' – gift wrapped fashion, with a paulownia (kiri) wooden outer storage box, or 'kiribako', and a 'furoshiki', silk brocade fabric cover.
