Matt Francis, Silky Oak TV Cabinet (CHESTS, CABINETS, SHELVING 2021)

This TV Unit is made from 100% recycled Northern Silky Oak from the Far North Queensland region. The top is 2220 x 446 and 836 high and is made from 2 pieces that were originally fascia boards from the old Tully Hospital and the inner top was made from 2 step treads taken from a historic Townsville building called Willmett House. The rear tongue and groove boards were reshaped from existing boards from the internal lining of my own house in Townsville. The drawer and door fronts were made from 5 full lengths of timber from and old high school science bench and carefully cut to ensure full grain alignment across the separate pieces. To construct the drawer frames and shelves I have utilised off cuts and small pieces from previous jobs made from the same timber sources in order to continue recycling as much as possible. The carcass is made predominantly with dowel and biscuit joints in 3 separate units including 2 side cupboard units and the internal 6 drawer unit. Assembly of the frames and tops was completed with Kreg pocket hole screws. Drawer frames have been made with dovetails cut on a Leigh Dovetail jig.
