Nat Matthews, Scuttle Treasure Chest (Furniture)
The chest itself is 'mountain ash' with jarrah inlay and the legs are jarrah. Drawer fronts are Grevillia pteridifolia which is called garlic-garling in the local language Miriwoong. It only grows around the very northern part of Gija country in the East Kimberley. Some build notes: The case is dovetailed and drawers are half blind dovetailed on jarrah drawer runners. The legs are cut and shaped from a single piece of jarrah with internal dowel-pins strengthening the short grain sections towards the top. Dimensions are 650mm wide x 340mm deep x 1000mm high. This piece was made entirely with hand tools. It resides in the bedroom however I would not be surprised to wake up one morning finding it has scuttled off somewhere else!
