Selena Cardillo, Retro Entertainment Unit (Student)
The entertainment unit was designed to bring back mid-century retro style into a modern piece of furniture. Through the use of curve bending and sleek, minimalistic shapes this vision was able to become reality. This piece was made with American white oak using both the solid timber and veneer. Flexible plywood was used to create the curves with veneer applied to the entire carcase create the solid timber effect. The doors are made with zebrawood, which adds a unique contrast to the light-coloured oak. Finger pull handles continue the minimalistic curved shape, creating cohesion throughout the design. The sliding door mechanism allows the doors to open smoothly without impacting the overall shape of the unit. With the use of dovetails, stopped housing and mortise and tenon joints the construction is sound and will withstand many years of use. The mid-century modern style is completed with the rounded over, angled legs.
