Jacob Santiago, Resin Dining Table (Student Awards 2019)

I intended to design and construct a unique timber slab resin dining table. The aim was to achieve a captivating, practical and strong unit which would complement and match other existing furniture in my home. I have designed this project because it will be very useful in my home, it will be used as a dining table where my family will eat every day as I have a big family. It will often be used to place convenient objects like clocks, flowers, photo frames, candles, lamps and other personal items. This project also gave me a chance to construct the resin dining table by mean of my own designs, research, thoughts and inspiration. In constructing this project, I used a strong and durable timber to increase the sustainability of my project as timber usually moves over time (cracking, bending, splitting). After extensive research of the type of timber I should use for this project, camphor laurel 2.5m x 800mm is recognised for its durability and best suited for the tabletop and legs in my project. I also used epoxy resin to provide my design with a modern, sophisticated element to enhance the overall finished project. To increase the difficulty level of this project I included various joinery techniques using hand tools as well as including the use of mechanisation. This meant I had to account for every issue and resolve each problem with my own technique. To ensure that these are fitted correctly, I had to be certain and confident on the correct usage and installation of the hardware used. Year 12, St Dominics College Kingswood.
