L12500 x 1100mm. Handcrafted from Salvaged Jarrah from the old Bunbury Jetty. I was engaged by Chevron to take a pre existing design for their reception counter and rework the outer facade to utilise salvaged Jarrah beams from the historic old Bunbury Jetty. They wanted a highly refined piece that still payed respect to the previous life of the rustic timber. The massive undertaking began with with a traditional Aboriginal smoking ceremony before transporting the timber 30kms to the workshop and removing hundreds of corroded bridge nails and bolts and removing a layer of tar and as much sand and rusted metal as possible. We used a total of 40 Jarrah beams- each 5500 x 300 x 150mm. We were provided with the digitally made templates and devised a system of copy cutting each beam on the bandsaw to its finished shape without any further processing. Each layer was brick stacked into a self supporting structure. The layers were tied together with threaded rod that ran through all the layers and bolted them together. The band sawing had to be highly accurate to perfectly align with the precision stone and metal work that was fabricated off site. The timber was scorched, wire brushed, ebonised with iron acetate and then finished with hard wax oil.
