Kumiko is a 600 year old woodworking art unique to Japan. It is made with small wooden pieces tightly put in place with over 200 different patterns. These small pieces are cut with exact precision such that glue is not used or needed. Kumiko are typically used in shoji doors and screens. They are created in repeating and mixed patterns as well as landscapes and animals. This piece uses only two patterns, the dark walnut wood is the Goma pattern and the light pine wood is the Kawari yae-zokura kikko pattern. Over 3,000 pieces were used to construct this example with only six different shapes of wood. The Rosewood frame contains LED lights used to illuminate at night (dark photo). The piece is 74 X 86cm and each piece is 2 x 12mm of various lengths.
