Julian Glencross McCartney, Promontory Dresser (Furniture)
The Promontory Dresser is the result of transcribing natural and man-made features seen while hiking through the Wilsons Promontory coastal region of Victoria, into a functional furniture design for a modern living space. Standing as an architectural monolith, the dresser is reminiscent of the giant stacked granite boulders and convict-built structures of the Promontory landscape. The dominant timber is Victorian ash; its straight grain accentuating the linear profile of the piece, while its fresh biscuity satin-oiled tones help to soften right angles. Gippsland blackwood features on the top edges of the drawer fronts. The warmth of this timber is a cue for the hands to reach out and connect with sharknose pulls. Fire-scorched rails and staves speak of the blackened trees scattered throughout the coastal bushland. The combination of enclosed and open storage compartments allows light and shadow to interplay. With the hope of striking a balance between form, function and meaning, this piece has a story to be told beyond what simply stands before us.
