Claire Sherwood, Plywood Modular Storage Units (Student Awards 2018)

My bespoke modular storage units are made from 24mm birch plywood and have 18mm melamine board as the inset cupboard doors. The three smaller boxes measure 400 x 400mm while the three larger ones measure 400 x 800mm and have removable shelves to increase their possible uses. The boxes were jointed using biscuit mitre joints, and the individual units connect and are held in place by diameter 6 stainless steel pins. My cupboard doors are decorated in marquetry made from recycled laminate, and all six units can be placed in such a way that they mimic the pattern in the marquetry. This entire project requires very simple processes, using the table saw to cut the mitre angles being one of the most difficult. The cupboard doors have stays attached to hold them open while in any position. These units were designed to have the ability to be positioned together in any way the user desires, or separately as individual pieces of furniture. They have many possible uses besides cupboards, shelves and drawers, such as a coffee table, stool, seat, divider, bedside table, bed head and for display.
