I designed and built the Playing Chair at the Centre for Fine Woodworking, studying with Michael Fortune. I created the chair as a complement to what got me into woodworking - the guitar I made and entered in last year's competition! I wanted to design a solid yet comfortable chair in which I could play my handmade guitar. The roomy coopered seat provides ample room and stability for an acoustic jam, and is comfy enough to sit in for hours of practice. The hand shaped sculptural back is nature-inspired, evoking tulips and art deco motifs. I was interested in playing with the figure in the Ash I used and have it work with the shape of the chair. With the whirlwind of finishing the course at CFW, I haven't yet had a chance to actually play my guitar in the chair, but I'm looking forward to spending winter evenings after the workshop in it.
