Nick Carpenter, PianoGuitar (Art & Accessories)
This very large guitar was conceived when disassembling a no longer playable, old, upright piano. I wanted to reuse the maximum amount of piano soundboard, in its original form, as best I could. Thus, the size of the final instrument was dictated by this component. The ladder bracing that supported the soundboard in the piano was kept intact and is now the guitar's bracing too. Piano keys were also used for the rosette and truss rod cover. The overall look of the guitar was made to represent the age and history of its former self. The cracks and holes in the original soundboard are still visible (albeit filled), the grain raised and a soft satin finish applied. Timbers used include German spruce, jarrah, hoop pine, Queensland maple, Tasmanian oak and ebony (along with the Ivory in the keys). This instrument functions beautifully as a six string double bass.
