Penina Wall Flower Sculpture American Alder, 81 tall x 132 wide x 64 deep-centimeters, 32 tall x 52 wide x 25 deep-inches. The Penina Wall Flower Sculpture represents a continuation of Mark’s investigation of leaf and flower forms initially interpreted through his furniture and now sculpture. The top of the Penina Wall Flower sculpture started with a laminated block of wood twelve inches thick and weighing over two hundred-fifty pounds. It was sculpted into a flower weighing thirty pounds over a period of eight months. The stem was tenoned into the top. It was initially roughed out with chainsaws and grinders and then refined with softer tools such as small die grinders, files, and rifflers. The piece becomes more difficult to execute the closer it comes to completion due to the delicacy of the outer edges of the flower which tapers to 2 to 3 mm.
