Origin is the starting point of my exploration into incorporating hand carved textures, patterns, and lines into my work. It is a Dresser, made for my wife (and myself), using Ash for the base and shelves, Sycamore for the carved drawer fronts , and Birch Plywood for the casework and drawer boxes. I wish I could say that the material choice was intentional and had meaning, but the reality is that they were leftovers from other projects that needed to be used. My focus for this piece was not to craft something from the finest materials but to experiment with texture, and to this end I created a design that would balance as many textures as possible without ‘overcrowding’ the aesthertic. The imagery pays homage to the titans of our world, the Sun, the Sea, and the Mountain, each with its own profound symbology. To me they are the three fundamental elements of this world to which all humans feel simultaneously connected and humbled.
