For years I had been experimenting with geometric veneer patterns. The one that routinely caught my attentions was the cracked ice pattern. I eventually did some research on this pattern and learned that it’s actually based on a traditional Chinese pattern for window lattices referred to as the rustic ice ray design. In designing this set of shelves I wanted it to appear visually light. It came to me that using the rustic ice ray pattern as a lattice could accomplish this lightness by eliminating a solid back and sides, yet still be very strong and rigid.
