Mia, Migyeong Kang explores pre/post-consumer waste that has the potential to be transformed into furniture that brings exquisite value to everyday life. Inspired by the Korean word 'Narsha' meaning 'flying up to the sky', she aims to design upcycled furniture that elevates the aesthetic beauty of abandoned objects. With Narsha and Mesa57, she experimented with off-cuts generated by making a designer desk called Mesa57. She used resaw off-cuts from making the desk's access flap and took the advantage of their thinness. It allowed her to machine them into veneers to laminate-bend them to make the curved leaf feature. The legs are wedges generated by the process of tapering the legs. 3 of their pieces were combined for each leg, keeping the memory of diagonal cut on the end-grain. Other parts are also made of off-cuts wandering around the workshop. This project suggests that by wisely reclaiming cut-outs/rejects in factories and workshops, an end product that competes with primary products can be achieved while saving new materials, energy, time and labour.
