Scott Clafton, Nakashima Style Coffee Table (TABLES, CHAIRS, DESKS 2021 )
I have always wanted a slice of a tree in my house. Now I finally have one. There's so many interesting features in this Moroccan Ash slab. It's amazing to think it has reached this amazing level of complexity down to such a fine scale purely crafted by nature and plenty of time. The table is in the Minguren coffee table style of George Nakashima, who's work I find hugely inspirational. There's definitely a fine balance between the minimal design and stability of the table. Fortunately, I was able to achieve both, which was a very pleasant surprise working with a slab for the first time. The Moroccan Ash slab is combined with Victorian Ash for the stretchers. Although they're both called "Ash", looking at the grain structure there's clearly substantial differences between the trees these timbers come from. Despite that, they seem to complement each other pretty well!
