Jack Cerchiara, Muir Walnut Sideboard (WORLD 2021)

"In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks." - John Muir. Working with a beautiful natural resource like this highly-figured Oregon Black Walnut - I'm reminded that as a furniture maker, I must be committed to protecting this resource and the habitat in which it grows - to be thoughtful about its harvest and respectful when taking from our environment. I wanted to design and build a sideboard that both allowed the beauty of the wood to shine as well as offered interesting lines in which the observer can discover new facets that the grain has to reveal. The top and sides feature a book-matched waterfall to highlight the heavy figure in the grain, flowing uninterrupted over the sides of the piece. The rounded and tapered legs add lightness, breaking up the angular profile of the cabinet. The single storage drawer features American Cherry side panels, through dove-tails, and a walnut and cherry bottom. The mitered joints feature floating tenons and the legs are pinned with solid walnut dowels.
