Tom Burke, Modern Study Desk (Student)
This Modern Study Desk was designed and manufactured as a Year 12 HSC Project. The style of this project was inspired by the acclaimed Sydney fine furniture maker Darren Oates through his fusion between modern and traditional fine furniture. The study desk utilises Tasmanian blackwood to construct the main carcase, featuring rock maple veneer laminated curved legs and American walnut drawer fronts. The project has been constructed with three ‘push to open’ dovetailed drawers with recessed Birch veneered plywood bases. The legs are supported through the turning of multiple identical beams, turned on the copy lathe, to create a strong and sturdy foundation for this modern study desk. This lightweight desktop is detachable from the legs, assisting in further ease in transportation and relocation if required. This final manufactured design is a blend of various techniques to make a seamless amalgam between traditional techniques and modern features as a tribute to an everchanging timber and furnishing industry.
